What
is the HPV Vaccine? |
|
The HPV vaccine protects you from the human
papillomavirus (HPV). There is currently one
HPV vaccine that is approved for use in men.
The Gardasil HPV vaccine protects you from
genital warts.
|
 |
Why
Do I Need the HPV Vaccine? |
|
Because genital warts can be prevented!
Genital warts is a common STD (sexually transmitted
disease) and is highly contagious. Any men
who have ever had sexual contact may be infected
with HPV and subsequently develop genital
warts. The more sex partners you have will
also mean the higher chance you will get this
STD.
If you have genital warts, you may have noticeable
symptoms on your sexual organs, most often
small stalks. Having genital warts may cause
you pain, affect your sex life, emotions,
and self-image. Even after treatment, the
disease may recur.
Furthermore, if you have been infected with
HPV, you may transmit the virus to your sex
partner. Women infected with HPV can also
develop genital warts. And more importantly,
cervical cancer may develop as a result of
HPV infection.
Therefore, all men should be vaccinated against
HPV to prevent genital warts. You can protect
yourself as well as your sex partners. The
vaccine protects men from 90% of external
genital lesions caused by HPV types 6, 11,
16, and 18. These include external genital
warts and penile cancer.

Is
the HPV Vaccine Suitable for Me? |
|
The HPV vaccine is recommended for boys as
young as 9 years of age. Ideally, the vaccine
should be administered before the onset of
sexual activity. However, men who are already
sexaully active may also benefit from vaccination.
|
 |
Should
I be Tested Before Vaccination? |
|
Screening for HPV is not required before
receiving the HPV vaccine. The chance of having
been infected by more than one type of HPV
is minimal. Any men can get various degrees
of benefits from vaccination, regardless of
whether they have been previously infected
or not.
Our doctor may ask you a few questions about
your health status before giving you the HPV
vaccine. You should discuss individual concerns
with our doctor before receiving the vaccination.

 |
Is
the HPV Vaccine for Men the Same as the
One for Women? |
|
Yes. The Gardasil HPV vaccine for men is
the same one used for prevention of women's
cervical cancer. The vaccine, whether used
in men or women, provides protection against
the same HPV types.
HPV in men causes genital warts. In women,
HPV is the main cause of cervical cancer.
